Helping Your Little Duckling: Tips to Support a Nervous Swimmer

At Bobbin Babes we strive to create a comforting and fun environment for both children and their parents.  While some children take to swimming like ducks to water, others may feel hesitant or nervous. As parents, guardians, or caregivers, your support and encouragement play a crucial role in helping your little one build confidence in the pool.

Here are our top tips to help support your nervous swimmer…

 1. Create a Positive Environment:

Ensure that the swimming environment is welcoming and positive, something which you will always find at Bobbin Babes. You can help by speaking to your child in soothing tones and offer reassurance to ease any anxieties.

2. Start Small and Progress Gradually

At Bobbin Babes, we encourage the children to progress naturally by holding the children when they are first introduced to the water so they have the constant reassurance and boding time with their parent or guardian. When they are ready for some independence, we begin with putting arm discs on the children which can be taken off in stages. This allows them to progress at their own pace without pressure.

3. Use Fun and Playful Techniques:

Incorporate games, toys, and playful activities into swimming sessions to make them enjoyable and less intimidating. Encourage laughter and splashing!

4. Lead by Example:

Show your child that swimming is fun and nothing to fear by demonstrating confidence in the water yourself.

5. Celebrate Every Success:

Praise your child for every small achievement, whether it's blowing bubbles, floating on their back, or taking a brave leap into the water. Celebrate their efforts and progress, the teachers at Bobbin Babes will always join in and celebrate with you.

6. Be Patient and Understanding:

Understand that overcoming fear takes time and patience. Be supportive, encouraging and never compare your child to others in the pool – everyone learns differently!
